7 November 2025 - A "ROHMAN" GLADIATOR
3Cs' Mohammed Rohman visited Rome, but despite going to the Colisseum, his battles came when he called in at the Rome Aventino chess club and played a few games against some of the locals. Mo is pictured with one of their young players, Lorenzo, who is rated at approximately 1800 and against whom Mo drew 2-2.

Father and son, Sean and Noah Hicks had a successful weekend at the Scarborough congress where they both competed in the "Foundation" section and in which Noah finished joint runner-up and won a junior prize with an unbeaten 4.5 / 5 while dad Sean took a rating prize by ending just a half point behind and in equal fourth position out of 71 entrants
In the same section Sophia Dyash scored 2/5 while other 3Cs players ended as follows .. Rob McLean (Open - 2.5), Declan Johnston (Intermediate - 3.5 and winner of both rating and junior prizes), Beyazid Kocak (Intermediate - 2.5), Yavuz Kocak (Minor - 3 and winner of junior prize).
A prize for the best individual club was won by The Chess Centre from Ilkley whose 14 players at the event scored a total of 53 points. 3Cs - with 9 players competing in the tournament - scored 44 and finished 5th out of 25 entrants.

Yavuz Kocak won his first rated tournament when finishing as champion in the intermediate section of the West Yorkshire junipor rapidplay event at Ilkley.
Yavuz ended unbeaten on 5.5 / 6 while, of the 18 entrants in the competition, Yavuz was the only non-Yorkshire based player !!!

Twelve 3Cs players appeared for Greater Manchester teams in the County Championship semi-finals at various locations around the country.
The u-1650 and u-1450 sides were both in action at Coventry, where 3Cs were represented by (left to right) Noah Hicks, Claire Kerton, Ved Boganadham, Mo Rohman and Charlie Locke.
Elsewhere the open-age county team, of which over half the players as well as manager Vic Pelling had 3Cs connections, defeated Middlesex 9.5 - 6.5 to qualify for the national final

While on a visit to London, 3Cs' Mitchell Burke took the opportunity to visit the Richmond & Twickenham chess club where they were holding a blitz event in remembrance of International Master Gavin Wall who died suddenly a few weeks ago. Mitchell finished on 3.5/5 although a draw against the eventual winner was the only game not won by the champion.

Yavuz Kocak (shown in action) came equal third in the u-1500 section of the Darnall & Handsworth rapidplay, scoring 4/6 while Ved Boganadham finished on 2.5 / 6 in the u-1900 tournament.

"Playing as a team" seems to have been given a new meaning by some of the 3Cs players at the recent Crewe congress.

The Bolton tournament took place as usual over the Easter weekend at which 3Cs were well represented, including (as shown in the photograph from left to right), Mohammed Rohman, Sean Hicks, Noah Hicks and Claire Kerton.

Mo Rohman gained the first section win of his career with success in the u-1500 section of the Darnall & Handsworth (Sheffield) rapidplay event, finishing with an unbeaten score of 5.5 / 6 after starting as 7th seed out of 31entrants.
In the u-1900 section 12 year old Ved Boganadham, who began as the 21st seed out of 23, finished equal 3rd, scoring 4 / 6 as well as winning a rating prize.

Twelve 3Cs players competed in the Stockport rapidplay with Adam Ashton finishing joint top in the open section on 5.5/6 and his daughter Alannah, also in the open, scoring 2.
In the Major section, Ben Newton scored 2.5 while Suleiman Nisar, Declan Johnston and Ved Boganadham took part in the Intermediate section, scoring 4.5, 4 and 3 respectively.
Sachin Osmond finished on 4 in the Minor tournament which also included Noah Hicks (3.5) and Claire Kerton (3) along with Alex Titterington, Sofia Daysh and Kamila Shanazarova (all 2). Suleiman, Declan and Sachin all won rating prizes.

3Cs players Ben Newton and Ved Boganadham both won their sections at the Wigan rapidlay; Ben scoring 5 out of 6 in the Major section while Ved was unbeaten on 5.5 in the Minor tournament which also included three other 3Cs players, namely Claire Kerton (3), Hafsa Riaz (2.5) and Ibrahim Riaz (2).

On a recent holiday in Poland, 3Cs' Mitchell Burke (pictured) visited a chess club in Krakow where not only did he play a local International Master but also someone he had last competed against when visiting the country as part of the England junior squad in 2008 and 2010.

Crystal Ashton and daughter Alannah as well as Kyle Pelling played in the Menorca International event with Crystal and Kyle in the Open section (Group A) and Alannah in the under2000 tournament (Group B).

Crystal and Kyle both finished on 3.5/9 in the Open section (Group A) while Alannah's ended on 5.5/9 in the under-2000 (Group B) competition and was runner-up in the ladies' classification.

Edward Jackson (pictured) represented England in Greece at the under-17s' section of the World Schools' Championships finishing in equal 9th position (out of 35) while gaining 27 FIDE rating points and ending as the top-ranked English player at the event.

Kyle Pelling, Jade Drummond and Ibrahim Riaz represented 3Cs at the Swinton Academy Christmas Rapidplay in which Kyle scored 5 out of 6 and finished runner-up in the u-1850 section, during which he faced Jade in an all-3Cs encounter, while Ibrahim took part in the u-1450 tournament.

3Cs' Jonathan Miller maintained a somewhat unique personal record when drawing his individual game for Greater Manchester in their under-1850 fixture away to Yorkshire. Despite Yorkshire winning the match 8-4, Jonathan continued his run of not having lost in a County game since playing in his first over 40 years ago.

Not only did Crystal Ashton, Mitchell Burke and Kyle Pelling all finish on the same score at the Ilkley congress, it appears they were just as close to each other while playing ... as can be seen by the photo in which Mitchell is shown stood up in the green shirt, while Kyle is top right in black and Crystal middle right in red.
